The Atkins Lady Red Devils softball team opened their season with an 11-4 loss to the Clarksville Lady Panthers. Atkins led 1-0 after the first inning -- a home run by Lexxie Gooden -- but gave up five runs in the bottom of the second. The Red Devils added a run in each the third, fifth and sixth innings, but the Lady Panthers scored one in the bottom of the third and five in the fourth. Atkins outhit Clarksville 10-8 but couldn't push runners across the plate. Gooden took the loss for the Lady Red Devils. She gave up six hits and 11 runs over three-and-a-third innings. She struck out four. Shelby Ross got the win for the Lady Panthers. She lasted six innings, gave up eight hits and four runs. Ross struck out 12. Clarksville's Blaise English hit a grand slam in the fourth inning to push the Lady Panthers ahead 11-2. English's homer scored Lauren Buss, Anne Blackmon and Skyleigh Curtis.
